Our partnership

The University of Waikato and the University of Newcastle have a long-standing relationship. Building on academic and research collaboration, the two universities progressed their relationship establishing a Student Exchange Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding. To create additional opportunities for collaboration in research, teaching, and professional services, Waikato and Newcastle progressed discussions about a strategic partnership agreement, which was formalised in 2024.

The strategic partnership agreement between The University of Waikato and The University of Newcastle focuses on research collaboration, exchange programmes, joint programmes, and partnerships with industry in New Zealand and Australia. These activities aim to promote academic and professional excellence through innovative collaboration and cooperation.

Partnership seed fund

The University of Waikato and The University of Newcastle invite all staff members to take advantage of our partnership seed fund. The fund is intended to support collaborative research, teaching, and/or professional services projects between our two institutions. Applicants will need to clearly demonstrate measurable outcomes of their projects and how their collaboration will develop going forward.

The Fund particularly encourages applications that are led by, or meaningfully include, Early Career Researchers (ECRs), Early Career Professional Staff, Indigenous staff, and doctoral candidates. These groups are central to the Fund’s role in supporting international professional development, building global citizenship capabilities, and nurturing emerging academic and professional talent.

Since its launch in 2022, the Seed Fund has supported 21 collaborative projects involving more than 110 staff, approximately half of whom were ECRs, across a diverse range of fields including health and wellbeing, Indigenous and cultural studies, technology and innovation, education, sport, and environmental research.

Waikato staff should visit the Global Engagement and Partnerships Toolkit on Te Hononga for guidelines, FAQs, and application details.
