Withdrawals

If you are unable to complete a paper for any reason, you can apply to withdraw from the paper.

Withdrawal Options and Refunds

Withdrawing will be shown as a WD on your record. WD is not a failing grade.

These time limits apply:
  • Withdrawn Full Refund (WDFR) - You may withdraw from a paper at any time during the first two weeks and receive a full refund of your fees.
  • Withdrawn (WD) - After the initial two-week period, you may withdraw up to six weeks from the start date of an A, B, C, or D period paper. In most cases, no refund of fees is available. This is known as a standard withdrawal.

If your withdrawal is due to circumstances beyond your control—such as an extended illness—you may be eligible to apply for a medical/compassionate withdrawal. To apply, log in to your MyWaikato portal, select the “Apply for late withdrawal” tile on the home screen, and follow the on-screen instructions. You will need to upload supporting documentation as part of your application.

For further details, including information about other teaching periods, please refer to the Academic Calendar –  Change of Enrolment Regulations.
  • Incomplete (IC) - If you withdraw from a paper more than six weeks after it starts, you will receive an IC which is a failing grade.

If you are absent from classes or fail to submit items for assessment, you will not be automatically withdrawn from a paper. If you do not withdraw from a paper using the procedures outlined in the University of Waikato’s Change of Enrolment regulations, you are considered to be still enrolled in the paper and you remain liable for any prescribed fees.

Exceptional circumstances

If you’re unable to complete a paper due to exceptional circumstances after the standard withdrawal or deletion deadline has passed, you may be eligible to apply for a late withdrawal. Applications must be submitted within 12 months of the paper’s end date.

To apply, log in to your MyWaikato portal, select the “Apply for late withdrawal” tile on the home screen, and follow the on-screen instructions. You will need to upload supporting documentation as part of your application.

Important Information

Please note that non-attendance at classes or failure to submit assessments does not automatically withdraw you from a paper. If you do not formally withdraw using the procedures outlined in the University of Waikato’s Change of Enrolment Regulations, you will remain enrolled and liable for any prescribed fees.
