About Read&Write
Read&Write is a literacy support tool that assists with everyday tasks such as reading text aloud, understanding unfamiliar words, and proofreading written work.
The University of Waikato provides a site‑wide license, giving all staff, students, and faculty full access to the app.
How to install
Below are guides on how to install the Read&Write app and connect it to your university account. Alternatively, you can find links to download the app on your preferred platform on the Everway website.
The browser extension is best used for online files (e.g. webpages, documents stored online like OneDrive or Google Drive) while the desktop app is used for offline files (e.g. documents stored on your computer).
Read&Write for Windows is available for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
Other browsers like Firefox aren’t supported — for the best experience, be sure to use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
To install, follow the steps below:
Google Chrome
- In Chrome, search for Read&Write in the Google Chrome Web Store.
- Select Add to Chrome and follow the on-screen instructions to install.
- Once it has finished installing, select the Read&Write icon then select Read&Write for Education.
Microsoft Edge
- In Edge, search for Read&Write in Microsoft Edge Add-ons.
- Select Get and then select Add extension from the pop-up to install.
- Once it has finished downloading, select View Extension and then select Read&Write for Microsoft Edge to launch the extension.
Note: You cannot use extensions within the Microsoft Edge Add-ons page. Go to any other webpage to use the extension. - Select For Education to use the Read&Write browser extension.

University-owned devices
If you are using a university device, you can download Read&Write directly from the Company Portal (Windows) or Self-Service app (macOS). To do this, complete the following:
Windows 11
- Open Company Portal from the Start menu.
- Browse or search for Read&Write.
- Once you've found Read&Write, select it and then select Install.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation.
macOS
- Open the Self-Service app from your Applications folder.
- Browse or search for Read&Write.
- Once you've found Read&Write, select the Install button next to it.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation.
