Flexible study options and delivery modes

Find a study format that fits your life, from fully online to on-campus with flexible options to balance study with work, family, and goals.

The University of Waikato offers flexible learning delivery modes designed to fit around your life.

Students who would benefit from flexibility around where and when they learn, without always being physically present in class on campus at the same time each week, can choose from several delivery modes that enable this flexibility.

Papers taught in the usual in-person, on campus format offer some flexibility through recorded classes (where possible) that can be watched later, but other delivery modes provide even greater flexibility.

Choose how and where you study based on your schedule, location, and personal circumstances.

Modes of teaching delivery

  1. In-person – learning activities take place at a specific location, typically on campus. The codes HAM (Hamilton) and TGA (Tauranga) show the campus location. Moodle serves as the platform for online learning. Certain learning activities require in-person attendance.
  2. Dual – learning activities are available both on campus and online. All academic work, including assignments, can be completed in the online format. When assessments vary between the modes of teaching, students may need to select one mode and maintain consistency throughout.
  3. Hybrid – most learning activities and assessments take place online, but some require in-person attendance. Hybrid papers require one day in-person, on campus attendance.
  4. Block – most learning activities and assessments take place online, but some require 2–7 consecutive days in-person, on campus attendance.
  5. Online – all learning activities and assessments are online with no in-person attendance required.

For Tauranga students in particular, the flexibility of delivery modes provide more options to take papers that have historically been solely Hamilton-based.

Delivery modes are indicated in the Subject Regulations which provide all the details about what to expect in each paper. These are available in the Subject Regulations before the paper starts, making it clear which papers offer flexible options.
