Computer Science outreach activities on campus

We offer a selection of computer science outreach activities at both Hamilton and Tauranga campuses.

These are interactive workshops hosted on our University campus, led by talented student ambassadors and academics. They are designed to spark students’ interest in computing and help them explore the exciting possibilities of a future career in the field.

Year 9 - 13

Learn how to create games in Gamemaker

Students will create their own game during the workshop and learn the basics of creating games using drag and drop coding. 

No previous coding experience is required.

Micro:bit Activities

Micro:bits are pocket-sized computers that let students interact with software and hardware in a fun and approachable way.

Transporting Ducks - students will get experience working with a micro:bit, using Radio Frequency and an Accelerometer to virtually pass a duck around the room.
Maqueen Cars - code the micro:bit to control the car using hand gestures.
Fun and Games - coding the micro:bit to act as a Magic Eight Ball and play Rock Paper Scissors.
Smart Environments – coding the micro:bit and Elecfreak’s IoT kit to create Smart Cities, Homes, Farms, and so on.

Learn how to create a website using HTML and CSS

Students will hand craft a website using HTML and CSS code. Students will learn: the basics of page layout, use of CSS for styling the page, how to use various input controls and embed a Google Map.

No previous coding experience is required.

Web hack

Test the web dev waters with an introduction to HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and the browser developer tools. Navigate your way through our special website using your new-found web hacking skills! Each page contains a hidden number. Collect them, in order, and enter them on the final page to crack the combination for the safe. But wait, there's more... if you can find it. 

This workshop is suitable for students with no prior coding experience, while still offering extra challenges for those with more advanced skills.

Software Development with Lego Mario

In this activity students get hands-on using Lego bricks as a tangible interface for exploring the software development lifecycle and common issues encountered when working in development teams.

No previous programming experience is required.
