When Paige McKenna-Harris began studying at the University of Waikato, she had no idea it would spark such an incredible career.
Today, she’s the General Manager of Household Care & Wellness at ZURU Edge — one of New Zealand’s most globally recognised consumer goods companies. And her fast-track journey with ZURU actually began while she was at university.
Drawn to Waikato by the reputation of its globally ranked, top 1% business school, Paige enrolled in a four-year Bachelor of Management Studies with Honours (now called a Bachelor of Business with Honours), majoring in Finance and Agribusiness.
While at university, Paige threw herself into campus life - competing in national and international case competitions, reaching the finals of the 42nd WMS Case Competition, and joining the Waikato Management School Students’ Association (WMSSA).
Her favourite paper was Applied Strategy, taught by Dr Stephen Bowden. She credits it with deepening her passion for strategic management, and teaching her the importance of effective communication.
“I loved the practical nature of the paper, working on case studies, as well as being a part of some great teams with people who are now my closest friends.”
She was then introduced to ZURU co-founder Nick Mowbray – a conversation that led to Paige being offered a part-time marketing support role at the company.
“The investment that many teaching staff made into my personal journey at Waikato meant I left with amazing learnings, experiences and friends,” says Paige.
After finishing her BMS(Hons) degree with first class honours, she accepted a full-time position at ZURU as Marketing Manager for well-known baby brand Rascal & Friends, while also juggling a role as international project manager.
Her career rocketed over the next four years. Paige stepped up to become Marketing Director for ZURU Edge, and at just 25, she was promoted to General Manager – Household Care & Wellness, overseeing major product categories and leading global teams.
Looking back, she says university was the perfect place to explore, experiment, and grow as a person. “University gives you the perfect environment to test and learn about so many facets of your area of study. And in doing so, you’ll meet some incredible people along the way.”
Paige’s career journey is proof that ambition, courage, and hard work can take you further – and faster - than you might expect.
