Meningococcal vaccines

Protect yourself against meningococcal disease, a rare but potentially fatal disease.

Meningococcal vaccines are used to protect against meningococcal disease. 

  • Meningococcal disease is caused by a bacteria, it can develop and become deadly in a just a few hours 

  • People who survive meningococcal disease often have serious long-term disability  

  • Young people living in crowded conditions are at higher risk, Māori and Pasific people are disproportionately affected.   

Hamilton

Meningococcal vaccines are available at Student Health Kirikiriroa-Hamilton.

Meningococcal B (Bexsero)

Meningococcal B (Bexsero) is given as 2 doses 8 weeks apart, this is free for NZ residents, under 25, during their first year of living in the halls.

Meningococcal B (Bexsero) is recommended but not funded for those not living in the halls but still living in communal accommodation and international students. It is available for purchase at a cost of $135 + nurse fee*, per dose.

Meningococcal ACWY (MenQuadFi or Menactra) 

  • Meningococcal ACWY (MenQuadFi or Menactra) is given as a single dose, this is free for; NZ resident students, in their first year of living in the halls who are under 25.
  • Meningococcal ACWY (MenQuadFi or Menactra) is recommended but not funded for those not living in the halls but still living in communal accommodation and international students. It is available for purchase at a cost of $130 + nurse fee*, per dose. 

*Nurse fee = $0 if NZ resident enrolled at student health.
